1egg1world grants $300k to Traditional Healthcare
6 December 2010
After three long years, the dream of a few friends wanting to make big changes happen has received a well-deserved boost – Traditional Healthcare (TH) will receive a $300K grant from charity, 1egg1world.
The team at TH have spent the past three years fundraising by shaking tins, holding sausage sizzles, running gigs, and wellness retreats. The result of their efforts is the construction of their first clinic in India.
"This money will make a massive difference to TH as we can invest the money in infrastructure to generate a regular income to continue building more clinics after the Indian clinic is finished," said Tom Connor, co-founder of TH.
TH intend to help the Australian indigenous community, with projects envisioned in Broome and Alice Springs. They also plan to build a malaria research centre in India.
Tasja Sproat, co-founder of TH, experienced the effects of malaria first-hand after her latest trip to India. She was overwhelmed with the news.
"CJ (from 1egg1world) said to me on the phone that he had found the cure for malaria…meaning he was going to give us the grant and my sickness (malaria recovery) would disappear due to the news."
"I cried, and then called Dada, who was at the clinic building site in India and he yelled and ran around and praised Baba."
"We called everyone to tell them about the news and a massive relief set in as I had been so nervous for a few days before the decision," said Tom.
It was a close finish. TH was initially one of eight shortlisted. They then made it into the top three before the final anxious wait for a final decision by 1egg1world. It was a rigorous process. Each charity shortlisted sent in a proposal, and met 1egg1world several times to explain their purpose, goals and activities. A scoring and comments system was used to assess each charity.
"It was a really tough decision. It came down two organisations in the end. TH came through trumps…just," said CJ, co-founder of 1egg1world.
So what was the clincher?
"We love TH’s approach to a healthcare, and it seems they are leading the way in offering traditional healthcare to developing communities,” explained CJ. “…they have realised the potential for their clinics to be more than just a healthcare unit, but a hub for the inspiration of growth."
"One thing that really helped is that we just got such a positive vibe from being around people in TH. The TH family is a vibrant and passionate one, we loved that."
"And we loved that they were so excited to have us on board. TH seems to have a real strength in connecting with other groups, that was an exciting aspect too."
1egg1world is a charity started by three chickens (university students) out to show the world that even the smallest thing can make a difference – they aim to raise $1 million to give to grassroots charities dedicated to the environment, poverty and education, health, and other causes.
Their concept is novel and their passion infectious. They dream big – their aim is to ‘up-trade’ starting from one just egg until they reach their $1 million goal. Their latest trade is a painting by one of Australia’s top artists, Craig Ruddy.
The 1egg1world team look forward to volunteering further with the charities after they distribute the funds.
Thank you 1egg1world!
